Luke’s Story:
Trusting Instinct Leads
to Life-Altering Diagnosis

Luke never expected a family vacation to change his life. But when something didn’t feel right, he trusted his instincts and saw his doctor. A colonoscopy revealed colorectal cancer at just 41 years old; further testing showed the disease was already stage 4.
As a father of two young children, Luke needed a team focused on helping him reach the milestones ahead. At UH Seidman Cancer Center, a multidisciplinary team reviewed his case and developed a tailored treatment plan, including radiation therapy. While treatment eliminated the cancer in his colon, Luke’s journey isn’t over. Now 45, he continues to receive therapy for cancer affecting his liver and lungs.
One innovation maintaining his quality of life is a hepatic artery infusion, or HAI, pump. The device delivers chemotherapy directly to the liver, targeting treatment and reducing some effects associated with traditional systemic chemotherapy.
For Luke, that means more time and energy to spend with his family. His experience has also given him a powerful message for others: “Just take care of your body,” he said. “If you feel like something’s wrong, go see a doctor. We’ve only got one body and one life.”
