About Angie Fowler AYA Cancer Institute
Angie’s Institute at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is a nationally recognized cancer program specializing in care for babies, children, teens and young adults with cancer and blood disorders. Staffed by a dedicated team of experts and backed by partnerships with UH Seidman Cancer Center and the National Cancer Institute-designated Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, Angie's Institute delivers unmatched continuity of care.
There, patients have access to leading edge scientific and translational innovations, including clinical trials, pediatric immunotherapy and proton therapy, as well as support services such as a full-time teacher and
school liaison.
A signature feature of the institute is Angie’s Garden (pictured above). The 7,500‑square‑foot rooftop healing garden is open year‑round and offers patients and families a peaceful retreat from the clinical environment without leaving the facility.
Roommates by Chance, Survivors by Strength
Living with a stranger can be an uncomfortable situation for any incoming college freshman. Agnes Rohan and Addison Boehnlein were certainly nervous when they met for the first time last summer. However, it didn’t take long for the Walsh University students to realize they had a lot in common.
Agnes and Addison are both childhood cancer survivors. Each was a patient at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Angie Fowler Adolescent & Young Adult Cancer Institute and was cared for by Duncan Sterns, MD, Kimberly Vehovec Chair in Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer.
The similarities didn’t end there. Both are also studying to become nurses, with the hopes of eventually working in pediatric oncology. Each of them agreed that their patient experience helped drive their decision to work in healthcare, and possibly even one day work at UH Rainbow together.
